Solar Net Metering And Its Benefits

Installing solar at your commercial location can give you a lot of benefits including cost savings, contribution to greener environment, sustainable energy and also consistent power supply. But, there is one thing that can actually with time, turn your solar installation cost come back completely into your pockets. That feature is known as net metering.

For those who know, we hope you are using it well. But, for those who do not know what net metering is; net metering allows residential and commercial solar power generators to sell their generated electricity to someone else when they are not using it. Basically, if your office is off on a Sunday, your solar plant can power any other infrastructure for its power requirements at a set cost through net metering.
Why Net Metering?
Because it is one of those features of installing solar plant, especially in India, which can reverse your investment expense to almost zero over a period of time. The solar plant will continuously generate power till it get the required sunlight. So, when you are not in the need of using it for your organization, net metering can help you sell the generated electricity to the ones who do.
The Support From Central & State Government
Many states have already passed net metering laws. In some of the states, the service and utility providers of solar themselves offer the feature of net metering voluntarily or as a result of regulatory decisions. However, due to a difference in the allowance of central government, the respective state government and other local body rules, the overall compensation provided to the solar customers may vary a lot.
A Strong Point To Sell
It is a known fact that during the day, solar customers, especially the commercial ones generate more electricity than they actually consume. This extra amount of electricity goes to the drain vault so that it does not overload the system. But, with net metering you can, not only provide enough power to your infrastructure, but can also earn credits for the extra generated power left unused. So, the main crux of the net metering concept is that the sustainable source of energy you get your electricity from can in turn provide you a sustainable from of credit too.
Restrictions
Even though you can sell the electricity generated, it cannot actually become your main source of income. The first reason is the limitation from both central and state government so that this features remains a privilege of cost cutting, but not misused for other reasons. Another restriction is the limitation of supplying to others geographically. You cannot supply the electricity generated to infrastructures far away from yours. Only your neighbors or probably the building next to it may enjoy this benefit.
An Opportunity
If you are a commercial building owner and have lent the building out for commercial use, you can simply install a solar plant on your rooftop and sell it to your tenants too. In this way, you can earn from the power supply you generate independently without the requirement of using the plant power for yourself.
Net metering in India is a relatively new concept and requires immediate attention as it is a long-term beneficial addition to your solar plant. India is accepting solar with open arms and is making the best of it. With the government’s support in making India completely dependent on renewable energy source, it is your part to make it come true faster along with you enjoying the benefits yourself.
