Even though the main benefit of going solar
is the huge amount of cost savings that you enjoy, it has some major benefits
related to the climate and environment also. The world is turning towards
renewable energy and India is not left behind. In fact, India is now the second
largest renewable energy producing country in the world. The government is
planning to commission 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022 and has already
commissioned 40 GW of renewable energy, out of which solar power is the major
contributor. One of the main reasons behind solar energy being the major
contributor is the ease, accessibility, consistence and efficiency of it out of
all other renewable sources of energy.
But, there are many environmental factors
that make solar power one of the most loved sources of energy in India.
Fossil Depletion
With the number of people increasing, the
number of users of fossil fuel is also increasing rapidly. There are on an
average 2 cars in every middle class family along with 2 bikes which run on
fossil fuel. Apart from this, their house consumes around 15 units every day
which may be coming from power plants running on fossil fuel itself.
By switching to solar energy, you can
essentially save the part of fossil burning with respect to household
consumption. The fuel that is drawn from earth is now leaving a great empty pit
which is like a time bomb about to explode. The news of fuel mines drowning
underground due to over excavation than required is frequent. Solar energy is
efficient enough to take the place of fossil power production and give ample
resources to work from without affecting the ground, water or the air which is
exactly opposite of fossil fuels.
Safety
Even though other renewable sources are
efficient to produce electricity, they may not safe enough. Did you ever come
across a wind mill video in which the rotors break due to high speed winds? Well,
in case of rooftop solar power, there are no movable items at all. Both wind
and hydro powered power plants pose a potential threat to animals and birds. Many
birds die by coming in the way of wind rotors and many fishes in the hydro
rotors. Solar in turn does not cause any harm to any animal or bird even if it
sits on the panel as they do not absorb heat either.
Carbon Footprint
Solar plants reduce the carbon footprint of
earth. It results in cleaner air, greener environment and fresher and healthier
people. Carbon emission directly affects the health of living beings. It is the
major cause asthma and many major disease causing threats. It contributed to
reducing global warming which is a good sign for many wild animals too. There
are policies introduced by United Nations under Sustainable Development Goals
which include solar as an essential part of making the goals meet.
ReNew Power Ltd. (‘ReNew Power’) is India’s largest renewable energy company. Since commissioning our first project in 2015, the Rooftop solar vertical now has over 250 installations adding up to a portfolio of around 120 MW spread over more than 75 cities in 17 States across the country.
